Undokai is a kind of sports/field day in which the entire school participates. The school is divided into three teams: red, blue, & yellow. The Munsters were on Team Yellow this year. Each grade performs a dance and participates in a particular event. Everyone runs and a select few are chosen to run the relay for their color team. It is a day meant to enjoy sports and to participate. My friend said that when she was a child growing up in Tokyo that there were more exercises and formal drills with entering and exiting the field. She told her kids, "If the Blue team wins, you can have
yaki onigiri (grilled rice balls) for dinner, but if you loose, you get
nato and gohan (fermented soy beans and rice)." The Blue Team came in second place so she let them have
yaki onigiri!
It started at 9:00 am and finished about 3:30 pm but by then I had lost track of the time. The weather was free of humidity, the air was cool, and the Yellow Team won! Here are a few photo highlights from our perspective:
